The Lichfield Icons
A Monumental Work on the Scale of the Medieval World View
Over four years, at the invitation of the Dean and Chapter of lichfield Cathedral, I designed and executed three large liturgical icons. They were Made in 2016 and 2018 aided by three lovely teams of Students and Staff from the Bethlehem Icon Centre, as part of a wider learning and development experience and supporting Christians in Palestine.
When were they painted
The pair of Annunciation icons were painted in 2016, and the Cross in 2018.
Who painted them?
Ian is the principal iconographer who designed and painted them. He was assisted by a group of his students from Bethlehem and two of the occasional tutors from the UK.
Why were they commissioned?
The then Dean of the cathedral wanted to restore the visual splendour of the nave in a way that was resonant with the cathedral in its medieval heyday, before the iconoclasm of the 16th and 17th centuries which had stripped the cathedral of colour and liminal images.
